Our name has been up-dated, as have the uniforms and programmes of the various sections. Rainbows are for girls from 5 to 7, Brownies for 7 to 10 year-olds and Guides for those between 10 and 14 years of age. For older girls there are opportunities as Young Leaders or Rangers, in the Senior Section.

Guiding has been active in Strathpeffer for many years and at present our District, Strathpeffer and West, has 1 Rainbow, 2 Brownie, and 1 Guide units. Sadly, unless we can enlist more adult commitment, both the Rainbows and the Guides will have to close after Christmas.

Rainbows tend to have shorter meetings and to need a higher adult/child ratio. They work as a single unit, with activity groups being flexible as required. Even at this age the girls are encouraged to make decisions and share ideas. “Rainbow Chat” is the forum for exchange of news, interests and activities. At this age the Promise is very simple, but Rainbows do agree to the same basic principles of commitment and helpfulness as do all the sections. They also share the same variety of activities spanning games, crafts, music, outdoor pursuits, and stories.

In Guides, the Promise and Laws, and the Patrol system still form the baseline, but now the girls themselves help to draw up the “Unit Guidelines”, which are signed by everyone.

All these programmes do, however, require considerable input from committed leaders.

Being a Guider is always a challenge, but also very rewarding – and usually fun! Requirements are a belief in the Guide philosophy, an enjoyment of working with children, imagination – and stamina! Training for new (or recycled) Guiders is provided and all leaders become part of, and have support from , the District team. The girls enjoy Rainbows and Guides. It will be very sad if these units have to close at Christmas.

If you feel inclined to rise to the challenge, please contact:

Mrs Marion Greig, Distict Commissioner. (Tel - 421556) or, (for Guides only) Dr Kitty Campbell, Assistant Guide Guider. (Tel - 421230)
